Dry lining is the process of attaching plasterboard to walls and ceilings without using traditional wet plaster backing coats (hence the name "dry"). It is a fast, clean, and highly effective way to create perfectly flat walls ready for a finishing skim coat or taping and jointing. The Two Main Methods of Dry Lining

There are two primary ways to dry line a room, depending on the underlying structure:

1. Dot and Dab (Direct Bond)

Dot and dab is used when attaching plasterboard directly to solid masonry walls (brick or blockwork). We apply thick "dabs" of specialist drywall adhesive to the wall, and then press the plasterboard firmly against it. We use a long spirit level to tap the board until it is perfectly plumb and flat.

When is it used? It is ideal for covering uneven brickwork in older properties, or finishing the internal blockwork of new extensions. The adhesive sets quickly, meaning the wall can usually be skimmed the very next day.

2. Stud Framing (Tacking)

This involves screwing plasterboard directly onto a timber or metal stud frame.

When is it used? Building new partition walls to divide a room, creating en-suite bathrooms, boxing in unsightly pipes or steel beams, or lowering ceilings.

Benefits of Dry Lining

• Speed: It is significantly faster than traditional wet plastering (like sand and cement), meaning your room is finished sooner.
• Less Moisture: Because it uses less water, the drying time before decorating is drastically reduced.
• Thermal Efficiency: We can use insulated plasterboard (board with Kingspan/Celotex bonded to the back) to dramatically improve the U-value and warmth of cold external walls.
• Perfectly Level: It is the best way to create a brand new, perfectly flat surface over old, severely uneven walls.
